Belgian Beer Company Innovates to Save Old Facility

Summary of the article

There is a famous brewery in Belgium. The brewery is known for 500 year old brewing facility.

A new filtering and bottling plant built a few kilometers away from the brewing facility and requires beer products to be carried by truck from the brewery to the new plant.
The company has realized that this process is quite impractical because of the added fuel and maintenance costs.

The brewery has found a way to improve the process of transporting beer products to the new processing plant without using transport trucks.

It emphasizes how the owner valued the old brewing facility.

Q: How do you find the innovation done by the Belgian beer company?

It's natural for the company to look for the way to reduce the cost.
They focused on the transportation cost. I think it is a good idea.

But, I don't know if it is a good idea to keep the old building when it comes to the safety
The facility attracts about 100,000 visitors a year.
So the owner needs to secure the visitors' safety.

Q: Do you agree with the decision to keep the historic facility?

I can understand they want to value the historic facility because it attracts many visitors and
it could be one of the factors which makes them famous.

But, as long as they hold the tour package which charges the visitors,
they have to guarantee the visitors' safety.

So, they might need to reinforce the facility or check if it can withstand a earthquake on a regular basis.

Q: Why is it important to preserve old buildings and establishments?

These things remind us of something historic.
For example, a couple of years ago, a big earthquake hit Japan and caused a big tsunami,
which killed a lot of people.

Many houses were collapsed by the flood and  washed away,
besides,  some ships got stranded.

The residents decided to leave some of them as historic establishments.
They definitely reminds us how tragic the disaster was and
the children who don't know this matter can take it seriously and have a chance to
take precautionary measures.

Human Intelligence Is Declining

Summarize of the article

Some scientist insists that people is getting less intelligent after observing IQ in the first world countries.

The scientists think that the main reason why IQ is dropping is mainly genetic. In general, intellectual people chose to have fewer children because raising children is very hard and they tend to give their first priority to their carrier.

On the other hand, other scientist say that IQ drop is only a lapse, and human intelligence will stabilize in time.

Q: Do you agree that people have already reached their intellectual peak?

I don't agree with this idea because I believe there are many areas we don't know yet.
A few months ago, one scientist announced her theses about a new cell, which can be helpful
to regenerate a new cell for body's parts.
It was considered a breakthrough discovery. So she got a lot of attention from media and public.

However she didn't have enough ability so, she failed to prove it completely.
She was criticized for the failure a lot.

Besides, her senior co-worker felt responsibility too much and committed a suicide.
He was also one of the professors who cooperated with her theses.
I is very ashamed that the portion of the study might be delayed because of the incident.

So when it comes to this new cell, we can say the progress is on its way.

Wikipedia
She claimed she had developed a radical and remarkably easy way to make cells, called Stimulus-Triggered Acquisition of Pluripotency (STAP) cells, that can grow into any tissue in the body.

なるほど、develop a racial and remarkably easy way to make cellsという事は、

the cells can grow into any tissue in the bodyということで、

"I'm a bit sleepy. I'm out of it."(ちょっと眠いのでボーっとしてます)

Q:For you, what is the best way to discipline your child?

I think the best way is to be a role model for my child.
Because I have to show what the good thing is and what the bad things is in a daily life.

Q: They sometimes have mood swings.
What do you do when they are in a kind of mood.

I try to distract their attention from what they are obsessed with.

For example, if my son wants to get a new toy in the store and starts to cry bitterly,
I start to talk about the different topics, which sounds more fun.

Of course, it doesn't work sometimes.
But, If I force him to do what I want him to do, he would strongly refuse to do it.

Q: How about spanking? Do you do that sometimes?

I've discussed it with my husband before because I wanted to have same idea about it with him.
Also, if you have a different idea about it, it can be a big problem in the family.

We decided that spanking was my husband's job.
If both of his parents do that, he would get stressed so much.

My husband is not always at home.
So even though he is really strict, that wouldn't pressure him.

Q:What was the worst thing your child did?

He can't explain what he is feeling and express himself well.
So he easily hit me instead of talking with me when he are stressed out.
He tends to express physically.

I told him " You shouldn't do what you don't want others to do".

No matter what the reason is, he is never allowed to hit me at home.
I told him no matter what the reason is, he is never allowed to hit girls.
This is very important because it would be how to treat their wives in their future.

I set only two rules because kids can't remember many rules.
They have to follow at home, they have to follow in school and in the country.
If I set many rules at home, it's becoming annoying.

Even though I set many rules at home, my son can't follow all of them and
doesn't know what is the most important thing.

Free Conversation

I'm a perceptive person.(自分は敏感な人なんです)

といい、

If you think you look beautiful in the mirror,
maybe your baby is a girl.

When I saw the sister-in low, her face was looming and I could see luminant or something.
Her baby was a girl.

I took an ultrasound yesterday, but the doctor didn't say clearly.

Q:What are your dreams and goals in your life?

I used to work until summer as an English teacher.
But I want to come back to be a teacher after giving birth.

If I want to be hired by a company, I need to proof my English ability.
So I think I need to get TOEIC score,
but I think it is natural for the teachers to have a perfect score as a certificate.

So my immediate goal is to get a prefect score of TOEIC.
Maybe the certificate would support me when I start to look for a job.

Q: What or who make your life meaningful?

Of course my family, my husband and my son.
and of course they sometimes irritate me, but they give me a lot of happiness.

Part  of me think half of my life exists to support their lives
because I need to cook for them, do house chores, do the laundry and clean my house for them.
Of course I do that for myself, but if I need to do that only for me, I can cut corners.
But if I think I should do that for them, I think I want to improve my cooking skill,
keep my house clean anytime and so on.

Eventually, these things makes my life meaningful.

Q: What kind of life would you like to have?

I've discussed it with my husband.

My life style will be dramatically different from my current one.
So I'm sometimes wondering how I work. Until summer, as a teacher, I used to work part-time.
I came back home by the time my son came back home.

But after giving birth, I want to work regularly and make more money.
If I think in that way, it would be difficult to continue to be a teacher.
Because teaching job is in the morning and in the evening mainly.

On the other hand, I don't know if I can be satisfied with cushier at a store.
Teaching is more fun, meaningful, and enjoyable.

So my husband asks me "which is more important, money or making your life meaningful?".

I know money is also important,
but If I continue to have a boring job everyday, I don't think I can live a life full of passion.

Therefore, maybe I need to pursue my dream and make effort to fulfill my dream.

A:「I would make it up to him」

make it up to~で「~に埋め合わせする」と言う意味。

I had to cancel the appointment with her.
I'll make it up to her later.

A:「You don't know how much this means to me.」

A:「I didn't know you are such a cynic.」

A:「I hope you are in the mood for margaritas.」

I'm sorry I'm not in the mood for fish today.
How about Yakiniku ?

A:「I play it by ear.」

I didn't have time to prepare for tomorrow's presentation.
Anyway...I'll play it by ear.

A:「She is also beautiful enough to be worth the trouble.」

I know your job is so hard.
But I think it's worth the trouble if you have a chance to make so much money.

A:「You are athletic.」

Free Conversation

It is very easy to get fat now.

I easily put on a few kilos in a week. So I need to be careful about what I eat.

I lost weight after giving birth.

My older son is jealous of the baby.

breast feeding/formula milk

Pregnant woman's body is very sensitive, so it is better to play it safe anytime.

*育児
child-rearing

The expected date of birth is around the end of March.

It takes time to feed a child and dress him up.

Q:What are the things that you like and dislike about children?

Children are very moody. They sometimes feel bad, sometimes good.
They easily throw a tantrum if they can't do what they want to do.

I don't like this part.

We have to control them. It is very difficult and needs experience to control them very well.
Especially, in the public places like restaurant and transportation,
they easily get bored and distracted. They end up acting up

So we always need to entertain them with something
they are curious about.

Q:Do you like being around children? Why or why not?

A:

Actually, I'm not maternal type at all. Of course I love my son.
But this is a different story from I love my son and I like being around him all day.
I don't think I can stand being with him all day.

So, I decided to start working when he was one year old.
Of course making money is important, but spending my own time is also important.
If you are away from your children for a couple of hours,
the time would be a good chance to reflect on your life, and refresh yourself,
and you would think you value the bonding time with your son.

Q: What can adults learn from being around children?

I always learn something from children.
Whenever I need to scold my son,
I have to think how to explain why this is wrong before doing so.
And I need to think what is right and wrong.

Furthermore, of course I have to be an good example for him.
So I can't do the wrong thing.

Q :Do you think that children are funnier than adults? Why or why not?

I think they are funnier than adults.
Because they don't know much about the things yet.
Instead of that, their imaginations are beyond adult's ones.
They are sometimes really creative and funny.

And they are not shy about making mistakes.
They really enjoy new things and like sharing their ideas.

121. be central to~「~にとって重要な」

139.anticipated outcome 「

anticipate(動詞)の使い方が問題とされています。

140. impose short-term costs

I don't want to burden you with my worries.(オックスフォード現代英英辞典)より)

*lightly used equipment.

そのため、conventional(形容詞)が入ります。

I am thoroughly tired.
I examined it thoroughly.

You should introduce yourself concisely.

「by Enrique Vargas, one of our senior recruiters.」
Enrique Vargas)

185:

つい私は、a copy of a contractを選んでしまいました。

「How much would it cost to mow the lawn weekly in spring and biweekly in summer and autumn months?」

163: To ask her to review a document.

本文では2段落目の「I have enclosed your new catering contract~(~と一緒に同封したよ)」
「Please look over the information...(情報を見てみてね)」と書いています。

182:A form for potential customers.

To receive a free price quotation(無料の料金見積もりを受け取る為には)とあります。

68-70

That would save us the trouble of having to make a trip to your office.

save someone the trouble of ~ing「~する手間が省ける」

例:If you could help me prepare for the meeting,
that would save me the trouble of typing the documents.

153-157
Additional events are in the process of being finalized.

in the process of ~「~の段階」

例: Your business trip is in the process of being arranged.

155-157
These discounts also apply to orders placed through our online store.

apply to~「~に適用される」

例: New rules will apply to all employees.

165-167

A repair is in progress.

in progress「進行中だ」

168-171

seasoned speaker

181-185

transformed the garden from just ordinary to highly attractive

She joined the make-up lesson yesterday.
Her new make-up transformed her from just ordinary to highly attractive.

A:「It's a vicious cycle.」

That's why I've put on weight.
It's a vicious cycle...I have to break the cycle!

A:「I'm so cranky!」

My three year old son sometimes skipped a nap.
In this case, he easily gets cranky. Still, he refuses to take a nap.

A:「I was so afraid when I suggested a picnic that you'd make fun of me」

A:「That's why you're going to grovel at her feet and beg forgiveness.」

She is one of my best friends. I hope she continues our relationship as we had.
So, that's why I need to grovel at her feet and beg forgiveness.

A:「You're gonna have to suck up to her.」

Everyone doesn't like him because he always sucks up to his boss.

A:「Making Yoga class was a matter of life and death.」

Shopping during her days-off is a matter of life and death.
This is the only way to relax for her.

A:「We all hope to experience something that makes our lives meaningfull.」

I hope to experience something that makes my life meaningful.
So I decided to take up something new.

A: 「It's just a matter of time before they break up.」

「It's a matter of time before・・・」という言い回しで「~するのも時間の問題」。

I think it's a matter of time before your heavy morning sickness has gone.

A: 「There is an excellent chance I'll loose my mind.」

「There is a chance

There is a chance someone will stole your wallet if you put it on your pocket.

A:「This is the one thing in his life that he's passionate about.」

I'm passionate about child-raising, so I'm sure that I'm suitable for working at a daycare.

A:「We're not gonna screw up his future.」

I screwed up my presentation because I didn't prepare for it at all.

A: You are not mature enough to have a realistic perspective.

I think it is important to have a realistic perspective when you reflect on your life.

A:「 I didn't intend to cause a scene.」

A:「She got her period.」

A:「If I make a better offer, why shouldn't a qualified person reap the benefit?」

他に、「get the benefit」ともいえます。

If you take over your father's job, you will reap the benefit.

(I was browsing brochures.

You tube

ETS TOEIC 1200

138 However uncomfortable they may be, helmets, goggles, and gloves absolutely must be worn by anyone entering the construction zone.

However frustrated I am, I wouldn't cry like him.

119. The environmental commission concluded that there is a need for immediate funding to repair the dam.

122. Mr. Jefferson has a reputation for taking risks, but his coworkers describe him as reasonably cautious in most aspects of his job.

123. Club members are allowed to attend the Healthy Living seminar at no cost.

Now that sales of Chage&Aska's CD are not sold at stores,
we end up buying them online at a high price if you wish to buy.

125. As discussed in our telephone conversation this morning, Mr. Fox will arrive at your factory at 2 P.M on Wednesday, March 14.

As +(it is )+discussed:

131. Safety precautions must be taken by all laboratory employees while working with chemicals that are potentially harmful.

Safety precautions:

140. All advertising at the National Textile and Garment Convention is subject to approval by the board of directors.
(National Textile and Garment Convention

be subject to:~次第である。

The schedule is subject to change.(この予定は変更される可能性がある。)

16 Is a text message supplementary role?

Do you think text message is one of the important communication tools? If I’m asked the same thing, I would say “ of course.”(Unfortunately, I don’t have smart phone, though. )

For example, I haven’t met many friends for a long time because of my busy life. The thing which makes us keep the bond with each other is text messaging. I exchange messages with my friend as if I'm talking with my friends.

The message can be long sometimes, but if I receive quick response from my friend, I give a short message in hope that I can continue to get a response soon. I don’t care about the length of the message. The most important thing is to tell what I want to say and to make sure receiver can understand what I want to tell.

However, recently I received a short message which didn’t seem to make sense. I thought it must have been a joke and didn’t take it seriously. It is OK. Some of messages we send must be just an entertainment as long as each other understands that they don’t include any serious meanings. However, if how it’s received is different, it would cause a rift in relationships. If you send serious messages and receiver replies with a joke, the receiver may lose your credit.

I don’t know how important a text message tool is, but I may consider it just a supplementary role to keep communication with others. If I need to tell complicated things or mixed feelings, maybe I should call directly. Still, sometimes I hesitate to call, concerning the time and the receiver’s condition. I would have a hard time getting used to consider a text message just a supplementary tool.

take it seriously:真剣に受け取らない
how it’s received is different:受け取られ方が違う

<第1回 Part5/6>

128:Major industries in this district include food processing and aircraft manufacture.

他の選択肢manufactures(複数形)もありましたが、

136:The effective use of landscaping makes the difference between having a real garden and simply a collection of plants.

between having areal garden and simply (having ) a collection of plants

<第2回 Part5/6>

111: The city council conditionally approved the highway extension project pending the results of an environmental review.

114:Factory officials reported that with the installation of the new machinery, errors during assembly have decreased by 15 percent.

124: Everyone responding to the restaurant survey will receive a $10 gift certificate to the Rangely Cafe.

Whoever

We will give a free sample to whoever buys more than $10.

Whoever

The woman is sweeping the floor.

The smartphone has two year warranty, does't it?
No, just one year.

He is instrumental...

ETS TOEIC 1200

125 The senior project manager will be on-site next Thursday and has requested that the editors meet him in his office at 9:30 A.M.

request that 主語+(should)+動詞の原形

<オマケ>
117. Mr. Shmidow hired two lawyers to help with future contract negotiations.

122:Since receiving notice that the director of the Deerfield Orchestra will retire, the board of directors has been searching for a replacement.

126:All hair-care products will be 25 percent off this week in celebration of Trey Salon's fifth anniversary.

in celebration of~で「~を祝って」。

129:Residents argue that another new shopping center in the heart of the city is not financially sound.

137:Advertisements placed by merchants in The weekly Roundup do not necessarily imply endorsement by the management of the newspaper.
(The weekly Roundup

not necessarily~「必ずしも~ない」

151.  A new approach to product development stresses products that are "good enough" for the use for which they are intended.

1)A new approach to product development stress products.

2)The products are good enough for the use.

3)They are intended for the use.

This is a new book for which I have been waiting.

115 Please remember to include your account number and signature on all payment checks.

<オマケ>
113: Ms. Kushida's managers feel that she deserves special recognition for her performance in the last sales campaign.

116: Although the two computer processors differ in price, they are comparable in terms of their quality.

121:LTD Enterprises is currently seeking an accomplished individual to replace the current director, who will be retiring at the end of the month.

133: All resumes submitted to our human resources department will remain on record for one year from the date of receipt.

date of receiptで「受理日」。

136:it is imperative that the documents be meticulously examined before they are sent out to clients.

It is imperative that ~で「~以下は必須である」の意味。

138: As the number of local residents' visit to public swimming facilities climbs, so does the demand for lifeguards to supervise them.

The demand for lifeguards to supervise them also climbs.

A: My sister likes ARASHI.
B: So does my brother.

A: I want to take a break.
B: So do I. (私も)

Me,too.

139:It was Joanne Huber's groundbreaking work on the photoelectric effect that won her the lifetime excellence award.

The book won him fame.

199: What is offered to Pura Green customers who refer new clients?

「refer something/somebody to ~」で、
「to send someone or something to a person or organization to be helped or dealt with」と言う意味。

My doctor is referring me to a dermatologist.
